Fellow Drammers!
Exciting news — our club is thrilled to welcome Glenlivet’s Master Distiller Alan Winchester, along with their global brand ambassador Tristan Campbell and their archivist Chris Broussseau. We’re going to put Chris to work on this one — our club has secured 2 incredible bottles, on top of the amazing bottles our friends at The Glenlivet generously donated:
25 year old Royal Wedding Reserve. A very special official Glenlivet bottling for the Royal Wedding in 1981 (Charles & Di, maybe you’ve heard of ‘em? ha!). They really pulled out all the stops to make this a legendary bottling (according to Whiskey Exchange, it features a “generous dollop of sherry in the mix”). Very few of these bottles still exist, and when you do see them, you’ll be looking at north of $1,500/bottle, so needless to say this is a very special opportunity.
Gordon & Macphail 15yo. Our club also secured this special George & J.G. Smith’s branded 15yo Glenlivet bottled at 57% abv in we believe the 1980s, which will also run you $1,500/bottle on the secondary market btw. It’s funny, we actually secured several more bottles than we could price into this event, and initially we had planned to include a 40yo bottling instead, but after consulting with some of the members who are particularly knowledgeable about Glenlivet, it became clear that even with the lower age statement, this higher-proof Gordon & Macphail was the way to go.
1970s 12yo Glenlivet. One of our members, Richard Baum, has been saving this bottle for a rainy day and generously donated it for our event this week. He’s not certain if its 1970s and thinks it might even be older — we’ll have to ask the archivist, but another fun blast from the past, back when they still wrote not single malt scotch but “unblended all malt scotch whisky” on the label, ha! 43% abv.
Nadurra (Cask Strength). Nadurra means “natural” in gaelic, reflecting that this is non-chill filtered and bottled at a natural cask strength coming in at a delightful 60.2% abv. As we understand it, this line was initially launched in travel retail and then brought into market around 2014. This particular bottle was bottled in August of 2018, matured in first-fill oloroso sherry casks from the Spanish region of Jerez.
Enigma. Another high-proof, presumably cask-strength (but you never know) whisky from the Glenlivet. It’s bottled at 60.6% abv, and basically that’s all we know about the actual whisky — no other information is given, and so true to the name, it’s a bit of a puzzle. This is the 4th edition in this line, released in July of last year. The first was released in 2013 (“Alpha”), the second in 2016 (“Cipher”), and the third in 2018 (“Code”). Apparently there are certain rewards from consumers who complete an interactive crossword puzzle. Looking forward to learning more about exactly how this works on Thursday!
Caribbean Reserve. Here The Glenlivet whisky is “selectively finished” in barrels that held Caribbean Rum, bringing out sweeter fruit and toffee notes. 40% abv.
The Glenlivet 18yo Batch Reserve. Last but not least, the 18yo Batch Reserve, a defining whisky for this storied brand that dates back to 1824. 40% abv.
That’s our lineup, we hope you can join us!
