Fellow Drammers!

We’re starting a book club! Each month we’ll select one whiskey or spirits book, then we’ll get together with the author to discuss and taste some fun drinks! We’re kicking things off on Sunday, October 25th at 3pm EST with “Hacking Whiskey” by Aaron Goldfarb. The book was a finalist for best new book at the 2019 Tales of the Cocktail awards,. In Whisky Advocate’s words: "If you're worried that you--or someone you know--are becoming a whisky snob, this book should cure you pretty quickly." Sounds like our kind of irreverent fun! It first got our attention for its focus on creating your own blends from store-bought whiskies. The synopsis and some info about the author are below. As for what we’ll be tasting, we’re using a couple unusual whiskies that the author had a hand in creating, first the Treaty Oak Distilling Red Handed Rye finished in a gin barrel, and then a McKenzie Single Barrel rye finished in an ice wine cask! Not to be outdone, we’ll see what Aaron thinks of a couple of our Drammers-exclusive selections, the 5yo Oated Cask Strength Bourbon from Kings County, and the True Blue Cask Strength Corn Whiskey finished in tequila casks from Balcones. Then as a cherry on top we’ve sourced an old dusty bourbon at auction, “CAMEL BOURBON” distilled by the Old Crow Distillery, possibly dating back to the 1970s. So everyone who signs up will get these 5 pours plus a copy of the book. $40/person for Drammers Members / $55/person for Drammers Observers. We hope you can join us! Cheers!

Synopsis

This is not your ordinary whiskey book, it's a collection of ingenious ideas and shortcuts to help you temper your whiskey to greatness in the privacy of your own home. Aaron Goldfarb, a whiskey geek (and writer), is reporting from the field, where he's gathered tips, recipes, and insider secrets about the weird yet delightful ways in which whiskey is being used today. Things like making cheap homemade blends that taste fancy, infusing whiskey with marijuana smoke, adding it to infinity bottles, and doing bone marrow luge shots, to name a few. So get your hands wet (and your house smoky) and take him up on the challenge of upgrading your whiskey (just don't forget to brag about it online).
