Fellow Drammers!
Wanna meet the folks behind what is probably the new MGP? We're delighted to announce this event on October 20th starting at 8pm EST / 5pm Pacific with Bardstown Bourbon Company, an important newish distillery in Bardstown Kentucky that honestly you need to know about. We had the pleasure of visiting the distillery when we were there last month for the Peerless barrel pick event, and this place is really something. First of all, it's fucking huge. They have a zillion fermenters, each larger than my apartment, honestly however big you're imagining, it's way bigger. So, while it would be easy to categorize them in the craft space given that they are fairly new, keep in mind this place pumping out more whiskey than nearly any distillery in the country, working as a contract distiller for a ton of brands we know and love (Jefferson's High West, Belle Meade, Hirsch, Calumet, James E. Pepper, Cyrus Noble, and I'm sure plenty of others they can't talk about. As a result, they are producing nearly 40 different unique mashbills, which is obviously crazy, so now maybe you understand why I'm starting to think of them as probably the new MGP. To pull all this off, they have assembled a pretty incredible team (including the former master distiller and director of operations at the also enormous 1792 Distillery, and hell, he's just their COO!). He will be our guest speaker for this event, along with Samantha Ann, their National Brand Ambassador and Nicholas Lewis, their General Sales Manager for Maryland, DC and Delaware (he's also a fellow Drammer and no doubt many of you will recognize him from some of our past events).
Anyway, unlike MGP, they also produce their own branded products, which I fully expect they'll be ramping up in the near future. We'll be tasting 9 of those expressions, a kind of heavyweight walk-through of this distillery (many of these are not available publicly). So here's our lineup, drumroll please:
Fusion Series Release #2. As the name implies, this is a fusion of house-made juice with sourced whiskeys. In this case, we're looking at a blend of 60% of their own BBC bourbon (3yo 18% wheated mashbill, 42% rye mashbill that is 2 years and 10 months old) and 40% is made up of a 12yo sourced KY bourbon with rye as the flavor grain. This was released in Spring 2020.
Fusion Series #3. Same concept here, same division of mashbill of in-house-to-sourced, this time the sourced juice that makes up 40% of the blend is a 13yo, and the in-house juice is all 3yo. 49.45% abv, released this Fall, retails for approx. $60.
Discovery Series #1. Their Discovery series, as the name implies, is a line of sourced juice that they've blended. The first release in this series came out last Summer, and features a blend of 4 different bourbon mashbills from 5 to 13 years old, all with rye as the flavor grain. This was released last summer, and it's starting to become scarce, but you can still find some here and there.
Discovery Series #2. Their second release was a blend of 3 Kentucky bourbons, 44% a 10yo, 39% a 12yo and 17% a 14yo, all rye mashbills from an undisclosed distillery. Gotta love that they disclose all these details (in addition to the above, for each of these releases they disclose the exact percentages of each grain in the various component parts (we applaud their commitment to transparency!). This one was released earlier this year in the Spring, and there are still some out there for sale.
Discovery Series #3. Their 3rd release in this line is a blend of 45% a 13yo MGP bourbon (rye mashbill), the balance comes from two difference KY bourbons (13yo and 10yo), both rye mashbills. 55% abv, just released this Fall, retails for approx. $130.
New Make! We do love a good new make here at Drammers. This one is a wheated bourbon distillate, unaged, and not available for purchase anywhere. They're letting us try this as a special favor to Drammers.
Unreleased Aged Wheater. For comparison to the newmake, we can try a 100% in house juice of their own wheated bourbon (presumably 3yo), which we can compare to the new make, and essentially we're getting a sneak peak at what their future entirely-in-house releases might taste like. Again, definitely not available publicly, they're doing this as a special favor to us.
The Prisoner Wine Company Barrel Finish. This is part of their Collaborative Series, all of which sell out pretty much immediately, so this one is either sold out or very nearly sold out (it was released this spring).
Copper & Kings Destillaré Orange Curaçao Finish. Also in their Collaborative Series, this one was just released this Fall, and we love that they're working with our friends at Copper & Kings (who we're doing an event with in November, but I digress...). Some of you hopefully got to try the Willet XCF curacao finish bottling, which was mind-bendingly unusual, and I'm hoping this one is just as much fun. Certainly not many curacao finished bourbons out there.
That's our lineup, we hope you can join us! Cheers!
