Fellow Drammers!
Our first “Drammers happy hour” a couple weeks ago went really well, so we’re continuing it on Tuesday July 21st starting at 5pm PDT / 8pm EST with Blackened Whiskey and their Master Distiller Rob Dietrich. The idea is a shorter, smaller-format get virtual get together, in this case we’ll be trying 2 expressions from this experimental whiskey brand launched by the band Metallica. The idea is an interesting one, that a variable in the whiskey-maturation process (alongside yeast, and temperature and age) can be sound. At one time or another, we’ve probably all been at a concert, standing near a speaker that was so loud we could feel it literally shaking our bones, and basically they have applied that concept to shaking whiskey barrels in a warehouse with loud music (Metallica music of course), perhaps most akin to the way Jefferson’s and some other whiskies are maturing barrels at sea to make them interact with the barrels in new ways. And while there are certainly any number of celebrity-affiiated whiskies out there, it’s hard to think of any that have brought in such heavy hitters as Blackened, first bringing on the well-respected Dave Pickerell as their initial Master Distiller, and last June after Dave’s passing, they brought on Rob Dietrich, formerly the master distiller at the highly-regarded Stranahan’s distillery in Denver, and Rob will be joining us on Tuesday.
We’ll be trying two expressions, Batch #094 and #101, and the idea is to see if we can taste the difference between barrels matured using different playlists. Blackened doesn’t have its own distillery (at least not yet), so we’re looking here at a blend of sourced straight whiskies finished in brandy casks. It will be interesting to hear more from Rob why they settled on “whiskies” (presumably using used barrels) rather than bourbon or single malt.
In any case, the event is priced at $5/person, and can be picked up in person or included with another order. We hope you can join us!
