Mezcal is personal. So, we knew that if we were going to put our Drammers Club's name behind a pick, we first needed to go there in person and meet the maestro mezcaleros to learn first hand what made their mezcal so amazing. That was true of our first mezcal pick (Drammers #001!) with Aureliano Hernandez, and we're back with a second pick now from Aureliano (Drammers #010), an incredibly rare pechuga-style mezcal made not with espadin but the rare tobala agave. THIS NEVER HAPPENS. We've never seen a pechuga-style mezcal made out of a tobala, and the result in unreal. But we also wanted to expand our palate, and so for our 2nd pick (Drammers #009), we also picked a mezcal batch from a different mescalero, the father-son magicians that are Simeon and Apolonio Ramirez. Both picks are up on our website Drammers.com now (note that the prices listed are inclusive of tax), and since we're saving 30 bottles of each pick for local chapter meetings, that only leaves about 50 bottles of each for the members.
This Friday at 8pm, we welcome Rezpiral founder Alex White to tell us about them and his incredible efforts to build a sustainable business for these single-family mezcaleros that could compete with the conglomerates. Pictured here you can see some of the 10 of us that ventured over to visit Simeon and Apolonio last October during the Dia de Los Muertos festivities in Oaxaca. They are some of the most important mezcaleros you should be tasting right now. So next Friday we'll taste our 3 Drammers picks, 2 from Aureliano, one from Simeon and Apolonio, and we'll also give a teaser to the future. We've committed to two new picks from two of our other favorite mezcaleros, Berta Vasquez, and Abel Martinez, which will be coming this Fall. 5 expressions in all.
