LALOCURA MEZCAL TOUR
For this event, we will drive to Santa Catarina Minas, a little over an hour South of Oaxaca City. There we will go on a tour of a legendary mezcalero — Eduardo Angeles, who everyone knows by Lalo (his mezcal “Lalocura” is available in the United States). Lalo is widely credited with being the first to isolate agave varietals and sell them that way (before that, mezcaleros would just combine whatever agaves they had as their mezcal). He has also been active at a governmental level, advocating for mezcaleros and policies that support what they are doing. He makes mezcal in a very traditional way, crushing the agaves by hand rather than using a tahona. We will see his distillery, learn about how he makes mezcal and why he does things the way he does, and then taste through his mezcal.
The per person cost is at cost of course and mostly goes to covering our transportation (which is more expensive than normal because of Day of the Dead), and we also pay a per-person fee to the distillery for the tasting. At the end, there will be an opportunity to buy bottles if you’d like, including stuff you won’t be able to get in the US.
