Hello NYC Drammers!
You’re invited to join us for a special rum masterclass on Thursday, June 4th at 7pm with the Global Brand Ambassador for Black Tot Rum, Mitch Wilson. We have had the pleasure of doing this event with Mitch in other cities, and it is one of the most memorable events we’ve ever done. Mitch knows so much about rum, and he is so much fun to listen to, we really can’t recommend this enough. If you like rum, if you’re curious to learn the basics, or you know the basics and want to do a deeper dive, this event scores on every single front. More details about Mitch and the Black Tot rum brand he represents below. We’ll be tasting at a minimum their Finest Carribbean, Historic Solera, and likely multiple editions of the Master Blender’s Reserve. But from events we’ve done with Mitch in the past, that likely doesn’t do justice to the lineup we’ll actually be drinking (he has brought unreleased component samples to illustrate aspects of the rum world at past events in other cities). So instead we’ll just say, trust us, the rum will be plentiful and extraordinary.
We hope you can join us. Charlie and Summer will be hosting at their apartment (250 Mercer Street, Apt C512, New York, NY 10012). We’ll order in light food (likely pizza, included in your ticket), and as always, we ask that nobody drive home after the event (less an issue in NYC, but all the same, ha). Please let us know if you have any questions!
Cheers,
Charlie
Black Tot Rum Masterclass with Mitch Wilson
Black Tot Day in 1970 marked the end of a navy tradition that had lasted for 239 years - the daily ‘tot’ of rum issued to crews in the British Royal Navy was voted to be given out no more. It also signified the end of a historic rum blend that had been continuously evolving since the early 1800s - a rum that cannot be recreated with today’s production methods or distilleries.
Join us for a very special masterclass with Mitch Wilson (Black Tot Rum Global Ambassador), as he presents a deep dive into the murky waters of this historic spirit. In this session, Mitch will explore some of the common myths and misconceptions associated with Navy Rum, and we will discover the real story behind the world’s first multi-country rum blend.
Guests will have a chance to taste Black Tot Finest Caribbean as well as each of its individual component rums from Barbados, Guyana, and Jamaica that we chose for our blend. This is followed by our latest release, Black Tot Historic Solera, made with rum matured through an authentic three-tier solera system. Each attendee will also be given a special taste of Black Tot Master Blender’s Reserve - bottled at 54.5% ABV (full Navy Strength), this is a limited edition blend of very rare single casks and flagons of rum from 1970, aimed at recreating the style of the authentic Navy Rum blend.

About Black Tot:
On 31st July 1970, the last rum rations were issued aboard the British Royal Navy ships – a day forever known as Black Tot Day. Black Tot Rum was first created in 2010 by Sukhinder Singh (Elixir Distillers) with Last Consignment - a rare and unique bottling of the Navy Rum flagons from 1970. Since then, Black Tot Rum have created their own award-winning signature blends, including Black Tot Finest Caribbean and their limited edition Master Blender’s Reserve, which pays homage to Navy blending tradition with an added emphasis on blend transparency. Black Tot Finest Caribbean & Master Blender’s Reserve 2022 were both awarded ‘Master Awards’ in the Spirits Business Rum & Cachaça Masters 2023, with Master Blender’s Reserve also winning the Rumof the Year Trophy at IWSC 2023.
