Hello Detroit Drammers!
You’re invited to join us for a tasting of rare whisk(e)y and spirits on Tuesday, June 23rd at 7pm. We’ve assembled a fun mix of Scotch, Bourbon, world whisky from Australia and the UK, and an unusual mezcal:
Nc’Nean Organic Single Malt Scotch - AON Single Cask #405 (STR Red Wine Cask). Nc’Nean is one of the most prominent of the new batch of distilleries to emerge in the last decade or so. They went the Jim Swan route, hence his trademark “STR” cask (shaved, toasted and recharred, almost always with an ex-red wine cask). Nc’Nean has placed a heavy emphasis on being a sustainable and organic distillery, which we can get into at the tasting (for now, suffice it to say that they are one of the only B-Corp certified distilleries in the world). They release one of these “AON” single casks each year as a special edition. 59% abv
Claxton’s - 12yo Benriach (Tawny Port Barrique). An independent bottling of Scotch from the Benriach (Highlands) distillery. Single Cask #C24117, yield: 331 bottles. 51.2% abv.
Iniquity - 7yo Australian Single Malt. This is batch #10 from this South Australia distillery, bottled at 46% abv. Don’t be fooled by the 7 year age statement, in that hot Australian weather, this is almost certainly maturing at a much faster rate than most.
Filey Bay - Yorkshire Single Malt - Oloroso Sherry Single Cask #904. A UK distillery, but not from Scotland — Yorkshire! This single cask is a US exclusive from their importers. 59.2% abv.
Broken Barrel - Secret Stash 6yo American Whiskey. This company was an early casualty of the whisky slowdown. They had an interesting concept - they bought sourced whiskey (always from the same distillery) and then inserted an “oak bill” (instead of mashbill, get it?) of staves into the whiskey. In this case, a combination of 60% bordeaux cask staves, 30% oloroso, 10% French Oak. The starting liquid was a 99% corn, 1% malted barley American Whiskey. They were based in LA, but stopped operations a couple years ago. This was one of the last special releases they put out before shutting down. 59% abv.
High West - Cask Collection (Petite Sirah Barrels). This distillery from Park City, Utah needs little introduction — one of the most successful of the craft distillery boom. It used to be that you could only get their experimental finishes in rarified single casks, which was difficult. So it was very welcome when they launched this Cask Collection series to make it a little easier. This is blend of straight whiskeys, Batch No. 24D18. 50% abv.
Medley Exclusive Selection - Single Barrel Bourbon (Denver Pick). This throwback was a Drammers single barrel selection in 2019 by our Denver chapter. The Medley family has an incredible history in American whiskey, which we can get into at the event, so when the current generation leading the company (Sam Medley) announced a single barrel program, selecting just one club in each of 50 states to receive some of his finest barrels, we were honored when he selected Drammers for NYC, Los Angeles and Denver. We’re almost out of this one, so we figured we’d give it one last hurrah before it’s gone. 56.7% abv.
Mezcal Vago - Elote. Rules? Who needs rules? One of the fun things when it comes to mezcal is that there is a lot of flexibility. Sometimes that’s a bad thing, but certainly it’s a good thing when it comes to pechugas (a celebratory mezcal that we can explain at the tasting). Here we have a kind of pechuga variant. Between its second and third distillations, the mezcal is infused with toasted, indigenous corn, resulting in a creamy mouthfeel with rich notes of roasted sweet corn, smoke, and tropical fruit. It might sound weird, but it tastes great. 50% abv.
That’s our lineup, we hope you can join us! We’ll order in light food which is included in your ticket (likely pizza) and as always we ask that everyone arrange a ride home — after all, we’ll be drinking a bunch of high proof stuff.
Cheers,
Charlie and Drammers Club
