Hello NYC Drammers!
Save the date! September 5th at 7pm. We’ve got some BIG news — one of the biggest living legends in the Scotch industry is coming to NYC and we’re throwing a big ol’ tasting to welcome him: Billy Walker!
Of course, Mr. Walker needs little introduction -- with over 50 years in the industry, Mr. Walker is one of the most respected veterans in Scotch. With a degree in chemistry from the University of Glasgow in his pocket, he began his career in whisky in 1972 at what was then one of the largest whisky companies in the world — Hiram Walker, which at the time was focused on its Ballantines blend. He worked through every aspect of production, eventually moving over to Inver House and Burn Stewart Distillers. But it was in 2004 when he really began to make his mark, putting together a team to buy the BenRiach Distillery, which they revitalized and made into a major name. Lest anyone think it was luck, he did it again with the GlenDronach Distillery, and was on his way to revitalizing a third distillery (GlenGlassaugh) when Beam Suntory came knocking in 2016 and made an offer he couldn’t refuse for all 3 distilleries. So, he started again at what would prove to be arguably his greatest achievement, acquiring and putting all his energy into his current project — The GlenAllachie Distillery, which we’ll be focused on at this tasting. When he bought it, GlenAllachie was mostly known for supplying malt to Chivas Regal, but Billyquickly went to work shifting the focus to single malts and launching them worldwide. We’ll be tasting a wide range of their releases with the man himself in person!
Address: Bar Aftermath (16-80 Madison Street, Ridgewood, NY 11385, right in the middle of all the Bushwick/Ridgewood action). As usual, we’ll order in light food (likely pizza), which is included in your ticket. A big thank you to Mike Pepper for running point on this event, since Charlie will be off gallivanting at Burning Man, poor bastard. We hope you can join us!
Cheers,
Charlie, Mike, Jared and Drammers Club
