Jun. 21: Drammers Philadelphia...
Hello Philadelphia Drammers!
We've been wanting to get a Philly chapter going for a while now, and we're so excited the moment has finally come. We'll kick things off this coming Tuesday, June 21st at 7pm, and our Philly chapter head Andrew Greenblatt has generously offered to host our kickoff event right in downtown Philly (thanks Andrew!). We've got a particularly fun lineup assembled for this one. Here's what we'll be drinking...
First up, we've got two fun single casks from the team at Elixir Distilling and their independent bottling line Single Malts of Scotland, owned by Elixir distilling (the folks behind The Whisky Exchange until they recently sold that to raise money for the new distillery their building on Islay). Both of these single barrels were selected by our friends at the legendary whiskey bar Jack Rose Saloon in Washington DC...
Clynelish Single Malt Scotch, 10yo, Single Malts of Scotland. The Clynelish distillery is owned by Diageo, and is famous for a "waxy" character. It plays a particularly large role in the legendary Compass Box blended scotches. This single barrel was aged 10 years and produced 213 bottles (cask ref: 800314, d. 17.05.2011, b.13.07.2021). Look for bright buttery and salty notes here. Bottled at cask strength - 60.4% abv
Caol Ila Single Malt Scotch, 13yo, Single Malts of Scotland. Next, we've got a famously smoky whisky from Islay, located next to the Ardbeg and Laphroaig distilleries. Caol Ila distillate plays the dominant "smoky" role in Johnny Walker blended scotches. Here we've got a single barrel from Jack Rose Single Barrel, sherry hogshead, 1 of 260 bottles, cask ref 313260, d.04.07.2008, b.14.07.2021), 59.4% abv
Next up, we’ve got one of our own single barrels…
Medley Bros. Kentucky Bourbon. This Drammers-exclusive single barrel was selected by members of our Los Angeles chapter, and since our Philly event will be coming the day after our event the night before in Los Angeles, our LA members asked that we include this as a way of welcoming you all to the club! We'll have a lot to say about the Medleys on Tuesday (their roots making whiskey in America date back to the late 1700s!), but suffice it to say we think their bourbons are seriously underrated. This LA barrel pick is especially tasty.
Next, our members in Tel Aviv want to say hello -- they're huge fans of M&H Distillery, located right in Tel Aviv and easily Israel's largest distillery. During covid, we held a massive online combined event with our members in the US and Tel Aviv, where we selected 3 experimental single barrels, which have just arrived...
M&H Distillery - Drammers Exclusive Single Barrel #47 - Fortified Red Wine cask. Distilled January 11th, 2018, bottled May 18th, 2021. Cask #2018-0520. 1 of 337 bottles. 64.7% abv
M&H Distillery - Drammers Exclusive Single Barrel #48 - Ex-Rum Cask. Distilled December 31, 2017, Bottled on May 18, 2021. 1 of 178 bottles. Cask #2017-0380. 66.7% abv.
M&H Distillery - Drammers Exclusive Single Barrel #49 - STR Cask. Distilled December 24, 2017, bottled May 18, 2021, 1 of 243 bottles. Cask #2017-0363. 69.4% abv.
And, finally, we've got 2 single barrels from the Welsh distillery Penderyn (these aren't Drammers single barrels, we just like them, ha). Tonight (Sunday) we actually have the pleasure of welcoming Penderyn's Global Brand Ambassador to our Seattle chapter, so we recently tracked down these fun single barrels from them...
Penderyn Single Malt Welsh Whisky - Single Cask, Aged 9 years, ex-Oloroso sherry, cask #575, bottle #121 of 260, 59.98% abv.
Penderyn Single Malt Welsh Whisky - Single Cask, Aged 8 years, ex-Moscatel cask, cask #M2, bottle #209 of 264, 60.09% abv.
That’s our lineup! We hope you can join us. We’ll have food on hand as usual (likely pizza). As always, anyone who has been to one of our events is welcome to invite friends to join.
Cheers,
Charlie, Andrew and Drammers Club
