Hello Seattle Drammers!

We’re sneaking in another Drammers tasting in this coming Thursday, May 4th at 6pm, before Elijah’s wife is expected to give birth to their third child! A big thank you to Birch Road for hosting us (address: 1212 Minor Ave., Seattle, WA, 98101). Our guest speaker is Kevin Obis, who represents Impex (they import and distribute a lot of our favorite brands). He’ll be bringing a range of their newer and more exciting expressions, including:

  • Lochlea - Our Barley. This new Lowland Single Malt Scotch captured big headlines when they hired John Campbell, the decades-long Distillery Manager at Laphroaig, to be their Master Blender. What a coup! We hosted an online event with Mr. Campbell recently (which you can find on our site under the video library) and their first releases are impressive! We’ll get a chance to try two of them at this tasting.

  • Lochlea - Harvest Edition.

  • Filey Bay - Flagship. This is another new distillery, the first single malt whisky made in, and of, Yorkshire. They are proud to be a farm-to-bottle distillery (not unlike Lochlea and Kilchoman). They first started distilling, and their first release of this, their flagship, came out shortly after their distillate turned 3 years old such that it could legally be called “Scotch”.

  • Filey Bay STR Finish. Same distillery as above, this time finished in an “STR” cask. For those aren’t familiar with that term, it means “shaved, toasted and recharred” - a way of rejuvenating a barrel that has been used so many times it no longer has much impact on the aging spirit. This technique was popularized by the late Jim Swan, and nearly always they use former red wine casks for this process.

  • Kilchoman 100% Islay, 12th Edition. Next up we’ll try an Islay single malt, heavily peated, and this edition features all barley from Islay.

Those 5 expressions give you an idea of what we’ll be tasting, but you know Elijah — he’ll have plenty of bonus pours on hand! We hope you can join us! Thanks to the generosity of Impex, Birch Road (and Elijah), we’re able to offer this one for only $20/person for members. Light food (almost certainly pizza) will be included as usual! Please let us know if you have any questions, and as always, anyone who has been to one of our events is welcome to invite friends to join in the fun.

Cheers,
Charlie, Elijah and Drammers Club

PS, Charlie will be hosting an event in Boston at the same time, so maybe we can have a quick video call for the members in each chapter to say hello to one another!
