Fellow Drammers!

Drammers Book Club returns with an online tasting and discussion on March 16th at 5pm Pacific / 8pm Eastern with Drew Hannush, the author of “The Lost History of Tennessee Whiskey”, which was released on December 9th. If you haven’t joined us for a book club event in the past, here’s how it works — you get a copy of the book on your own (it is available as a physical book and also as an ebook on Kindle etc., so if you have a Kindle subscription, you can download it free). If you’d like to sign up for the optional tasting kit, we will distribute a 5 sample pack of fun Tennessee whiskies for this tasting.

It’s kind of surprising to think how few books have been released discussing Tennessee Whiskey — a quick search on Amazon reveals two, both of which came out since August. This one in particular seems to have uncovered a lot of historical information that sheds new light on Tennessee whiskey. The author was recently interviewed on Whiskey Cast, where they discussed a heap of new evidence that challenges a lot of the myths in popular culture about Tennessee whiskey, including that most of the names we know from Tennesee whiskey (Jack Daniels, George Dickel, etc.) weren’t the ones making the whiskey so much as the ones selling it.

So, we figured we’d dive in to benefit from what Drew has uncovered with this special online tasting. It also gives us a good excuse to open up a couple of fun bottles of Tennessee whiskey we’ve had lying around for a while now. Here are the 5 expressions we will be tasting:

  • Best Dram, “Trail of Tears”, German Bottling. 14yo Tennesee whiskey (d.2003 / b.2017) distilled in USA, matured and bottled in Scotland. 50.9% abv.

  • Whiskey of America, 6yo “Tennessee Bourbon Whisk(e)y” - Distilled at Tullahoma Distillery, 54.9% abv, Cask MoS 17023, (d.2011 / b.2017), 1 of 225 bottles, Malts of Scotland bottling.

  • Davidson Reserve - Wheated Bourbon. Tennessee Straight Bourbon Whiskey. Distilled and Bottled by Pennington Distilling Co., Nashville TN. 4yo. 57% abv. Single barrel selected by Northshore wine and spirits in Knoxville, TN.

  • Nelson’s Green Brier - Tennessee Whiskey - Cask Strength. Our friends at Nelson’s Green Brier just launched this commemorative release of their Tennessee whiskey at cask strength, clocking in at 60.7% abv.

  • Chattanooga Whiskey - Malted Rye Whiskey. Last but certainly not least is a new malted rye release from the Chattanooga Whiskey distillery at 49.5% abv. Although our club bought a single barrel of malted rye from Denmark’s Stauning Distillery last year, we have not seen many malted ryes released here in the US.

And we’re in the process of selecting two more, and will update this page when we have more info.

Cheers!
