Our friends at Lagavulin just celebrated their “Open Day” for this year’s Feis Ile (the big whisky festival on Islay), where they released 2 special distillery-only releases. We were on hand to pick them up so that you, our members could try them. That includes possibly the best Lagavulin we’ve ever tasted — a 29 year old ‘Skies of Fèis Ìle’ release finished in a cream sherry (Amoroso cask) that only yielded 241 bottles and retailed for £2500 (about $3,185) per bottle. They also released a 10 year old Feis Ile bottling, an extra peated version matured in refill, heavily charred and first fill bourbon hogsheads to create more punch, that retailed for £175, 1 of 1800 bottles released. While we there, we also picked up another Distillery Exclusive bottling, matured in Ex-bourbon and heavily-charred American oak casks, Batch #1, 56.5% abv. All 3 will be included this tasting, along with two other expressions (that are new limited releases, but not distillery exclusives): the newest Offerman edition, as well as the 8 year expression they released in honor of their 200th anniversary (based on archived entries at the distillery dating back to 1886). So 5 expressions in total, and to walk us through them we’re thrilled to welcome back Ewan Morgan as our guest speaker, Diageo’s National Luxury Ambassador and Head of Whisky Outreach (basically, he oversees their entire education team, among other things).
