On Thursday, January 4th, starting at 5pm Pacific / 8pm EST (in the US), we are delighted to welcome back Ewan Morgan, the Head of Whisky Outreach for Diageo, for this special tasting of rare Lagavulin bottles. It’s great to welcome back — fun fact — he kicked off our first event in 2018 as well! And few people in the world could tell us more about all things Diageo and Lagavulin than Ewan, who has incredible history with the company. These days, he manages the entire US team of whisky educators for Diageo, which leaves him less time for educating people directly, so we are all the more grateful that he is taking the time to speak with us for this special tasting.
All 5 of the bottles we’ll be drinking at this event are cask-strength distillery exclusives, now long since sold out. We picked them up on Lagavulin day at the 2023 Feis Ile (the big festival on Islay where Lagavulin is located):
2018 Islay Jazz Festival Bottling. Combining 1st fill American Oak barrels, refill American oak hogsheads, and European oak puncheons. No age statement. Personally selected by Iain McArthur (also known as “Pinky”). Distillery Exclusive. 58.5% abv
2022 Islay Jazz Festival Bottling (14yo). Distillery exclusive bottling from American oak finished in brandy seasoned hogsheads personally selected by the distillery manager Jordan Paisley. 55.4% abv. 1 of 3000 bottles released.
2022 Feis Ile Bottling (12yo). Finished in Virgin American Oak casks personally selected by the distillery manager Jordan Paisley. 1 of 6,336 bottles released exclusively at the Feis Ile festival on Islay. 57.7% abv.
2023 Feis Ile Bottling (14yo). 1 of 3024 bottles released exclusively at the festival on Islay In May. This release was finished in Armagnac casks, personally selected by the distillery manager Jordan Paisley. 58.4% abv.
Distillery Exclusive Batch #1. Released exclusively at the distillery this year, a release matured in ex-bourbon and ex-heavily charred American oak casks. 1 of 7506 bottles. 56.5% abv.
