On January 21st, we’re kicking off our Drammers Louisville chapter with a bang — in person at the legendary Bourbon’s Bistro with its founder Jason Brauner, who also founded the whiskey brand Buzzard’s Roost (which of course we’ll be tasting at this event!). And whether you’re in Louisville or not, we’re inviting all of our members to dial in to join in the conversation (it will be a hybrid in person and online event).

I will never forget the first time I went to Bourbon’s Bistro, on September 1, 2012. I had read about it in Whiskey Advocate, which recommended sitting at the bar, asking for the menu, ordering a drink, and starting a conversation with the bar tender. Only after you established that you knew your whiskey, they recommended you ask for the private menu. At that point, if the bartender thought you would appreciate it, they would pass you a new menu with a list of unicorn whiskies the likes of which I’ve never seen again. Prohibition era bourbons, an extensive range of Stitzel Weller, Old Crow chess pieces, it just went on and on and on. I racked up maybe the biggest bill I’ve ever racked up at a whiskey bar that night, and drank 10 things I’ll probably never get a chance to drink again. Bourbon’s Bistro was opened as a bourbon-focused restaurant in 2005 — notably 5 years before the modern bourbon boom, and it was the only restaurant of its kind in Louisville — everyone thought he was nuts. You could argue — and many do — that it was the model for bourbon bar/restaurants that have become de rigeur nationwide. All of which is to say, we’re incredibly proud and grateful to be able to welcome Jason as our guest speaker for our Drammers Louisville kickoff event.

And since this is our kickoff event, we’re asking for our members to spread the word — if you have a friend in the Louisville area who you think would be a good fit for the club, please feel free to invite them (as an invite only club, we rely on our members to invite new members).

As part of the event, we’ll be tasting 4 expressions of Buzzard’s Roost, and we’ll include a bonus pour of a recent Drammers mezcal pick. Here’s our lineup:

  • Buzzard’s Roost - Straight Rye Whiskey - Peated Barrel. One of 800 bottles released in batch 1, bottled at 52.5% abv

  • Buzzard’s Roost - Straight Rye Whiskey - Single Barrel. 52.5% abv

  • Buzzard’s Roost - Straight Rye Whiskey - Barrel Strength. One of 800 bottles, batch 2, 57% abv.

  • Bonus Pour by one of the great female master mezcaleras of our time, Reina Sanchez — her Madrecuishe Mezcal by Rezpiral. Drammers exclusive batch pick. 46.6% abv

That’s our lineup! The online event will start at 8pm. For those joining in person, we’ll get together at 7pm, and some of us will be eating dinner beforehand at Bourbon’s Bistro, which you’re welcome to join.
