Dec. 4: Springbank's Director of Sales and Marketing Ranald Watson...
Fellow Drammers!
We've got some exciting news for you -- we've just announced a new online event with Springbank's Directors of Sales and Marketing, Ranald Watson on Sunday, December 4th, starting at Noon Pacific / 3pm Eastern US / 20:00 in Scotland. We've also got a teaspooned 23yo Blended Malt (a cask of Springbank teaspooned with Glen Scotia) exclusively for the club. More details on both below.
Let's get into what we'll be tasting at the Springbank event. Last year a group of our members traveled to Campbeltown for the Campbeltown Malts Festival -- arguably the biggest event of the year from Springbank's perspective. At that festival, on the Springbank "Open Day", they release a special festival bottling for each of their Springbank, Hazelburn and Longrow brands. We scooped up all three -- they were released in 200ml bottlings, but we managed to get 4 of each for the tasting, along with a couple older Springbank Society Bottlings. So we'll be tasting 6 expressions in total. More specifically:
Springbank 22yo Single Malt Scotch - Open Day Bottling - May 2022. Aged in two refill bourbon hogsheads and one fresh rum barrel. 50.6% abv.
Hazelburn 15yo Single Malt Scotch - Open Day Bottling May 2022. Three refill marsala hogsheads and one refill bourbon hogshead. 57.2% abv.
Longrow 15yo Single Malt Scotch - Open Day Bottling May 2022. Four fresh Oloroso sherry hogsheads. 56.2% abv.
Hazelburn 11yo - Springbank Society Bottling 2019. 4 re-charred bourbon hogsheads, distilled December 2007, bottled November 2019, 700ml, 54.2% abv. 1 of 1314 bottles.
Longrow 11yo - Springbank Society Bottling 2019. Refill re-charred sherry butts. Distilled Nov. 2007, bottled March 2019. 700ml, 56.9% abv. 1 of 2250 bottles.
23yo Blended Malt (Springbank with a Teaspoon of Glen Scotia). Our new Drammers Pick is pretty darn exciting. A 23yo single cask Springbank, and a fresh sherry hogshead at that. Distilled on 22 November 1996, aged in cask #288/304/302/305/49-1, and bottled on 16 July 2020 at 48.8% abv (700ml). This was bottled by one of our members who sourced the cask from an individual who purchased the cask from Springbank (back when they were selling casks for a song in the mid 90s.... Oh those were the days) Imported when the US was imposing a 25% tariff on single malt scotch, the cask was teaspooned with a few ml of 27 YO Glen Scotia, making it technically a blended malt. If you're not familiar with "teaspooned" whiskies, you can read more about them here. We'll discuss this bottling more at the event with Ranald Watson (Springbank’s Director of Sales and Marketing), and in the meantime it is available exclusively to our members for $800/bottle. We think it tastes amazing, and if you like big sherried Springbank bottlings, we think you'll agree.
That’s our lineup, we hope you can join us!
Cheers,
Drammers Club
