Drammers Book Club with Clay Risen, author of Bourbon: The Story of Kentucky Whiskey

We first welcomed author Clay Risen to Drammers Club as a guest speaker back on May 22, 2016, at the time celebrating his then recent book American Whiskey, Bourbon & Rye. Hard to believe how time has flown (and how many books Clay has written since then!), and we couldn't be more happy to be able to welcome him back as the focus of our next Drammers Book Club event (online) on Dec. 29th at 5pm Pacific / 8pm Eastern. This time of course, we're here to celebrate his beautiful new release Bourbon: The Story of Kentucky Whiskey, which was released on December 14th.

As usual, we've put together an optional tasting kit, which we'll get to Clay so he can taste along with us as we discuss his new book. The tasting kit includes samples of:

  • Willett’s Finest Quality Old Bardstown, Kentucky Straight Bourbon, 50% abv (Distilled and Bottled by Willett)

  • Four Roses Single Barrel - Kroger barrel pick (OBSQ, 10 years, 4 months), described at floral, spicy, medium body, bottled July 2021. For those not familiar, Kroger is a grocery story chain that is prominent in Kentucky and is known for getting especially good barrel picks.

  • Square 6 - the first release by Heaven Hill of whiskey distilled at the Evan Williams Experience on their pot still. This is a high rye bourbon, (52% corn, 35% rye, 13% malted barley), and bottled at 95 proof.

  • Bardstown Bourbon Company - Distillery Exclusive, Triple Blended Stave Finish, 52.23% abv. Technically I hand-filled it at the distillery, though I believe it is no different than the juice from the bottles in the distillery gift shop.

  • Bonus Pour - We won’t ask Clay to talk about this, ha, but as a fun bonus pour, we’re including a sample of our recent Dakabend 4yo Oaxacan rum, exclusive barrel pick, one of 3 of these barrels ever made of aged Dakabend rum (and the other two are in the mountains of Oaxaca).

Note, this does not include the book itself — everyone is encouraged to get the book on their own in the preferred format (it is available in hardcover and in ebook format).
