Hello LA Drammers!

You’re invited to join us on Monday, December 19th at 7pm where we’ll be tasting through a wide array of expressions from LA’s own Broken Barrel Company. We first met them at the Kentucky Bourbon Festival last year, and were delighted to learn they are based in downtown Los Angeles, which is where we’ll be meeting at their tasting room (address: 2332 E 8th St Los Angeles, CA 90021).

The idea at Broken Barrel Co. is to experiment with not just the mashbill, but also the “oak bill” as they call it. You may be familiar with the Makers Mark custom barrel program, where whoever is selecting the barrel can choose custom staves that are assembled into a barrel. Well, here they take that one step further, sometimes even dumping already aged whisky into a steel tank and then inserting a range of barrel staves to arrive at a desired flavor. For example, their core range cask strength Broken Barrel bourbon has an “Oak Bill” of 40% French Oak Staves, 40% Ex-Bourbon Cask Staves and 20% Sherry Cask Staves. The whiskey is sourced from Owensboro, Kentucky, but as we understand it their operation is in LA (the founder Seth Benhaim, who will be joining as our guest speaker, was born in Northern CA and raised in Southern California, and basically wanted to stay there). This is at least his second liquor initiative, having previously has success creating single bottle infused vodkas (www.infusespirits.com).

We’ll be digging deep through a wide range of their experimental releases, and half the money that everyone is paying for the tasting will go to them to offset the cost of the booze they’ll be providing (the other half will go to pizza, which we’ll order in as usual).

We hope you can join us!
