Hello NYC Drammers!

On Tuesday, August 23rd starting at 7pm, we’re throwing a party to celebrate the upcoming launch of Dixeebe Mezcal here in the United States, with our dear friend Asis Cortes making the trip from Oaxaca to join us to taste through his new mezcal line. Asis is a hugely respected figure in the mezcal community - among other things, he and his father founded the iconic mezcal brand El Jolgorio, which as we understand it is now primarily organized by the larger Cortes family, freeing up Asis to work on this passion project of premium mezcals, which are just about to launch here in the USA (it should start to hit stores in August).

Asis of course needs no introduction to our members who live in Oaxaca or who have made the trip down for Dia de los Muertos — not only is Asis the head of our Oaxaca chapter, but he also has generously let our members stay at his family compound (Ofrenda) the last several years we have come down for Muertos and he runs one of our favorite mezcal bars in Oaxaca (Puro Burro, where we have hosted many of our Drammers Oaxaca events). He also has a new establishment called La Pulquisima which we’ll get a chance to check out when we’re in Oaxaca for our next event there on August 16th.

All of which makes this upcoming event very special for us. Asis’ guiding principal for this new brand reflects the same values that Asis brings to everything he does — deep respect and gratitude for the immense culture and history of mezcal in his family and Oaxaca at large. Thus the name “Dixeebe” is perfect — it is loosely translated as the Zapotec word for “cheers” but signifies something more formal, which Asis explains is spoken in reverence, the purest expression of gratitude for their traditions and ancestors. In his words, “We see mezcal as a gift from the gods and “Dixeebe” is our offering of thanks in return”.

And he doesn’t say that idly — our club has had the opportunity to go with Asis to visit his family’s ancestral property, where they have found ancient fermentation tanks carved into the bedrock! Truly incredible. Dixeebe is something Asis and the Cortes family have been working on for a while now, together with the Hernandez family of Asis’s mother, and we’ve had a chance to try some of their expressions the last couple years in Oaxaca. Not surprisingly, this is truly exquisite mezcal, and we’re excited for our members to get a chance to taste it. We’ll update this with a list of the expressions we’ll be tasting at this event, but needless to say, nobody will go home thirsty, ha.

We hope you can join us! As usual, we’ll order in food to make sure nobody’s drinking on an empty stomach (probably Joe’s pizza), and anyone who has been to one of our events is welcome to invite friends to join in the fun. Please let us know if you have any questions.

Cheers,
Drammers Club
