May 14: Drammers LA with Pablo Moix, Co-Founder of Rare Character......
Hello LA Drammers!
We hope you can join us this Saturday, May 14th at 6pm -- we’re thrilled to welcome Pablo Moix as our guest speaker for this special edition of Drammers Los Angeles! This is a real LA whisky story. Pablo is the owner of the famed Old Lightning bar in Venice, which is widely recognized as having one of the finest collection of rare whiskies in the world. We had initially talked about hosting this event there, but they are not yet reopened post-covid (hopefully soon).
Pablo teamed up with our friend Pete Nevenglosky to create an independent bottling brand called Rare Character, which has been making big waves since it launched a few months ago -- you may have noticed their multiple single barrel bottlings at K&L and Mission. They source their whiskey from a wide range of places, so far including MGP, Dickel, even Buffalo Trace, and they've got even bigger plans in the future (hint: not just American whiskey). And if that wasn't enough to turn heads, they recently announced the jaw-dropping news that Andy Shapira, one of the top executives at Heaven Hill, is leaving Heaven Hill to join the Rare Character team! That's incredible news really -- Andy was the head of Western Division Sales and Corporate Analysis at Heaven Hill!
Between Pablo and Pete, they've got a lot of experience that they're bringing to the table. In addition to being the owner at Old Lightning, Pablo has over a decade of experience picking barrels, which helps explain why they've got such an impressive array of sourced products. And Pete Nevenglosky is the owner of numerous spirits brands including Avua Cachaca, which we're doing an event with next month. We actually first learned about Rare Character with our Las Vegas chapter (Pete lives there) and had the pleasure of welcoming his as a guest speaker in Vegas a few months ago. But this will be our first chance to welcome Pablo, who of course is based in LA, to Drammers.
Needless to say, we're very excited about this event. And because Pablo and Pete are being so generous (he's bringing a bunch of bottles for us to try), the cost to attend is less than normal ($20 for Members, $30 for non-members, which of course includes pizza). We'll be trying a wide array of their special single barrel releases, and if the transportation delay gods are kind to us, we might be among the first anywhere to try a new small batch expression they're launching!
