Hello Richmond Drammers!

We’re excited to announce a special upcoming tasting on Feb. 3rd at 7pm — a rum masterclass with Mitch Wilson, who is truly one of the most knowledgeable rum experts in the world. He is the Global Brand Ambassador for Black Tot Rum, a groundbreaking rum company based in London. A big thank you to Wolf for hosting and organizing (address:  41 Libbie Ave, Richmond 23226)!

Black Tot Rum Masterclass with Mitch Wilson

Black Tot Day in 1970 marked the end of a navy tradition that had lasted for 239 years - the daily ‘tot’ of rum issued to crews in the British Royal Navy was voted to be given out no more. It also signified the end of a historic rum blend that had been continuously evolving since the early 1800s - a rum that cannot be recreated with today’s production methods or distilleries.

Join us for a very special masterclass with Mitch Wilson (Black Tot Rum Global Ambassador), as he presents a deep dive into the murky waters of this historic spirit. In this session, Mitch will explore some of the common myths and misconceptions associated with Navy Rum, and we will discover the real story behind the world’s first multi-country rum blend.

Guests will have a chance to taste Black Tot Finest Caribbean as well as each of its individual component rums from Barbados, Guyana, and Jamaica that we chose for our blend. This is followed by our latest release, Black Tot Historic Solera, made with rum matured through an authentic three-tier solera system. Each attendee will also be given a special taste of Black Tot Master Blender’s Reserve - bottled at 54.5% ABV (full Navy Strength), this is a limited edition blend of very rare single casks and flagons of rum from 1970, aimed at recreating the style of the authentic Navy Rum blend.

Rums featured in the tasting:

  • Barbados 5 year old (Foursquare Distillery) - 46.2% ABV

  • Guyana un-aged (Diamond Distillery) - 46.2% ABV

  • Guyana 3-5 year (Diamond Distillery) - 46.2% ABV

  • Jamaica 3 year old (Worthy Park Distillery) - 46.2% ABV

  • Black Tot Finest Caribbean - 46.2% ABV

  • Black Tot Historic Solera - 46.2% *NEW*

  • Black Tot Master Blender’s Reserve - 54.5% ABV

About Black Tot:

On 31st July 1970, the last rum rations were issued aboard the British Royal Navy ships – a day forever known as Black Tot Day.

Black Tot Rum was first created in 2010 by Sukhinder Singh (Elixir Distillers) with Last Consignment - a rare and unique bottling of the Navy Rum flagons from 1970.

Since then, Black Tot Rum have created their own award-winning signature blends, including Black Tot Finest Caribbean and their limited edition Master Blender’s Reserve, which pays homage to Navy blending tradition with an added emphasis on blend transparency.

Black Tot Finest Caribbean & Master Blender’s Reserve 2022 were both awarded ‘Master Awards’ in the Spirits Business Rum & Cachaça Masters 2023, with Master Blender’s Reserve also winning the Rum of the Year Trophy at IWSC 2023.
